The Susquehannock Trail Thru Hike: A Day Five Reflection

On day five of my Susquehannock Trail thru hike, I faced a 17-mile journey from Wild Boy Shelter to Cross Fork. Despite a depleted battery and a wet start, I felt great and made steady progress. A Bear's Tale
One of the highlights of my day was an unexpected encounter with a bear. As I entered the Hammersley Wilderness Area, I came face-to-face with a bear walking on two feet, a sight that left me both amused and cautious. The bear, seemingly captivated by my audiobook, ran off after a brief encounter, allowing me to continue my journey without incident.
The Home Stretch
As I neared Cross Fork, the trail transitioned to a plateau with dry forest and flowing streams. My phone died, and with my Nitecore battery depleted, I relied on my navigation skills, which, thankfully, served me well. The sight of Cross Fork, PA, in the distance was a satisfying end to a challenging day.
A Trail Angel's Help
Upon reaching Cross Fork, I sought a ride back to Northern Gateway. I was fortunate to be picked up by a retired Machinist Mate named John, who became my trail angel. We shared Navy stories and enjoyed a refreshing Iron City Lager, a local favorite. This trail, I concluded, is a true gem of the east coast, offering both adventure and the chance to connect with nature.
