State of the Union 2026: Trump's Longest Speech, Iran Deal, and More (2026)

A State of the Union like no other: Trump's epic speech and its aftermath

A speech for the record books

In a move that shocked even his most ardent supporters, Donald Trump delivered the longest State of the Union address in US history, clocking in at a whopping 108 minutes! That's right, folks, Trump broke the record previously held by Bill Clinton, who spoke for a mere 89 minutes. So, what did this marathon speech entail, and why is it causing such a stir?

The Cost of Living Conundrum

Trump, known for his off-the-cuff remarks, stuck to a carefully crafted script this time. He hammered home a key message: America's fortunes have turned around since his election. And, as promised, he dedicated a significant portion of his speech to the economy and the cost of living, a topic close to many Americans' hearts.

But here's where it gets controversial: Trump didn't dismiss the affordability crisis as a Democratic hoax, as he's done in the past. Instead, he announced some measures he claimed would address the issue. He promised the government would contribute to workers' retirement funds and even proposed a policy to force tech companies to build their own power plants to prevent AI from driving up energy prices. But will these future pledges ease the burden on Americans feeling the pinch today? Polling suggests many remain unconvinced by Trump's assertion that life is cheaper now than under the Biden administration.

Democrats Weigh In

Democrats also made affordability a central theme in their response. Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger rhetorically asked, "Is the president working to make life more affordable for you and your family?" She went on to accuse Trump of enriching himself, his family, and his friends, calling the scale of corruption "unprecedented."

Iran: Deal or No Deal?

As the US continues to bolster its military presence in the Middle East, all eyes were on Trump's comments about Iran. Last Thursday, he hinted that a deal with Iran could be reached within 10 days. Five days later, he didn't provide much clarity but laid out a case for a potential future attack. He praised the success of last year's "Operation Midnight Hammer" strikes on Iran's nuclear sites and warned that the Islamic regime was pursuing its sinister ambitions once again. Trump stated that Iran wants a deal but hasn't uttered the "sacred words" that they will never have a nuclear weapon. He expressed a preference for diplomacy but made it clear he wouldn't allow the world's top sponsor of terror to possess such a weapon.

A Heroes' Welcome for Hockey Players, and a Cheer for the Absent Women's Team

Trump's invitation to the US men's hockey team made headlines, especially after his controversial joke about potentially inviting the women's team to avoid impeachment. During his speech, Trump presented the men's team as winners who made the nation proud. The women's team, who also won gold, declined their invitation due to timing and other commitments. Trump assured the crowd they would soon visit the White House, and the men's players applauded in support.

Supreme Court Justices: Unfazed by Trump's Insults

After six Supreme Court justices voted to invalidate many of Trump's tariffs, he called them "fools and lapdogs" and said their families should be ashamed. Despite this, three of the six justices who ruled against him attended the State of the Union: Chief Justice John Roberts, Amy Coney Barrett, and Elena Kagan. Justice Brett Kavanaugh, praised by Trump for his dissenting opinion, was also present. Trump shook hands with all of them but didn't offer the same effusive thanks as last year.

During his speech, Trump addressed the "Supreme Court's unfortunate involvement" in his tariff policy, stating that the cancelled tariffs would remain in place under alternative legal statutes and be even stronger.

Protests Inside and Out

While past presidents have faced heckling from critics in the chamber, this year, Democrats' House leader, Hakeem Jeffries, advised his party to remain silent but defiant. And that's exactly what they did, with many sitting stony-faced while Republicans cheered. Victims of Jeffrey Epstein, invited as guests, also remained silent in defiance.

Congressman Al Green was ejected for the second year in a row after holding up a sign that said "Black people aren't apes," a reference to Trump's recent social media posts about the Obamas. Later, when Trump criticized Democrats for not standing and applauding, some heckled back, with Ilhan Omar yelling, "You've killed Americans!"

Outside the chamber, protests were even louder. Dozens of boycotting Democrats gathered on the National Mall for the "People's State of the Union" event, and Hollywood stars Mark Ruffalo and Robert De Niro headlined a "State of the Swamp" event elsewhere in Washington.

Despite the protests, Democrats did applaud Trump at times, such as when he called for the rejection of political violence and when he urged Congress to crack down on insider trading among its members. However, one Democrat couldn't help but shout, "What about you?"

So, there you have it, folks! A State of the Union speech that will go down in history, leaving many with more questions than answers. What do you think? Do you agree with Trump's assessment of America's progress? And will his promises on the cost of living resonate with voters? Let us know in the comments!
