Steve Borthwick has ignited a fiery ambition within the English rugby team, daring them to envision a triumphant march towards the Six Nations title, a feat they haven't achieved in seven long years. But here's where it gets intriguing: Borthwick, recalling the 2007 Rugby World Cup final in Paris, where England fans passionately supported their team against South Africa, is setting his sights on the March 14th showdown with reigning champions France. "The fans can sense the potential within this group," Borthwick revealed to Rugby Union Weekly. "The team's trajectory is clear, and we're on the right track." He went on to emphasize the significance of the final round, noting that 17 of the last 20 Six Nations Championships were decided in the last set of fixtures.
And this is the part most people miss—Borthwick's strategy involves a meticulous approach. He anticipates a barrage of box-kicks from Wales, led by their new coach Steve Tandy, in their upcoming clash at Twickenham. Tandy's defensive system, borrowed from Scotland, involves two high tacklers aiming to halt players in the air.
"Wales will utilize their pace on the edges, moving the ball accordingly," Borthwick added. "But their core strength lies in their contestable kick game. Expect a deluge of 50 contestable kicks at Allianz Stadium." England, however, is ready for the challenge.
Borthwick has assembled a formidable 36-player squad for the tournament, with an additional five players, including the first-choice center Ollie Lawrence, undergoing rehabilitation from injuries. Among the squad are three uncapped players—Vilikesa 'Billy' Sela, Emmanuel Iyogun, and Greg Fisilau—alongside some familiar names who have struggled with form and fitness recently.
Northampton's George Furbank, despite a mere seven matches in eight months due to injuries, has been selected over the in-form George Hendy for the back-three role. Borthwick acknowledges Hendy's talent, stating, "He's an exceptional player who ignites excitement with every touch." Yet, the selection process was a close call.
With the Rugby World Cup in Australia less than two years away, Borthwick is committed to keeping all players engaged and feeling valued, even during injury spells. He shared his personal experience as an England player, emphasizing the difference between club and national team dynamics when it comes to injuries. At a club, injured players remain part of the daily routine, whereas with the national team, it's easier to feel disconnected.
"I want all England players to feel included, even if they're not on the training field," Borthwick asserted. Leicester's George Martin, currently unavailable due to injury, is just one example of Borthwick's inclusive approach.
