Severe Weather Disrupts Power Across the Island
The island is currently facing widespread power outages due to severe weather conditions. The impact has been particularly severe in Metro, where service interruptions have been reported in several areas, including the Parkway and Freshwater Road, Mundy Pond, Hoyles Avenue, Shea Heights, Mayor Avenue, Stamps Lane, Flatrock, Mount Carson, and other parts of Mount Pearl. Additionally, power outages have been recorded in Goobies, Adeytown, Plate Cove, Southern Harbour, Charlottetown, Grenfell Heights in Grand Falls-Windsor, Cox’s Cove, Cormack, Reidville, and Lourdes.
Newfoundland Power is actively addressing the situation, but restoration efforts are ongoing without any estimated times for completion. The strong winds have caused significant damage in certain areas, such as a fallen utility pole on Torbay Road near Ennis Avenue, and structural damage to several portable signs in Metro.
This severe weather event highlights the vulnerability of the island's power infrastructure, prompting discussions on the need for improved resilience and emergency response plans.
