In a groundbreaking move, Singapore is set to harness the power of its national servicemen (NSmen) in the cyber security domain. Starting June, operationally ready NSmen with expertise in cyber security will be reassigned to the Digital and Intelligence Service, marking a significant shift in the country's defense strategy. This initiative, led by Senior Minister of State for Defence Zaqy Mohamad, aims to bolster Singapore's cyber defense capabilities by deploying these NSmen alongside regular and full-time national servicemen (NSF) in sectorial cyber defense teams under the Defence Cyber Command. The teams will focus on protecting critical infrastructure, including vital sectors like telecommunications, power, and transport, against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats. This approach, as Zaqy Mohamad emphasized, is a "more coordinated, proactive approach against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats." The initiative acknowledges the valuable real-world and industry experience of NSmen, many of whom are skilled cybersecurity professionals. For instance, Military Expert 4 (ME4) Kwek Kiat Jun, previously an administrative support assistant, has transitioned to a legal officer role, advising the 4th Singapore Armoured Brigade on the laws of armed conflict. His civilian experience in the finance sector has equipped him to handle "tense and high-pressure" situations, an asset he brings to his military role. This program, part of the Enhanced Expertise Deployment Scheme since 2022, has already reassigned over 850 NSmen to diverse areas like legal, digital, counseling, and intelligence. By doing so, it enables NSmen to contribute significantly to national defense, leveraging their civilian expertise. This initiative not only strengthens Singapore's cyber defense but also highlights the potential for NSmen to make a real difference in the face of cyber threats, inviting discussion and debate on the role of reservists in modern defense strategies.
