NHRA's Top 25 Alcohol Drivers: A Celebration of Speed and Talent
NHRA's 75th anniversary salute to its racers continues with the unveiling of the Top 25 Alcohol Drivers. This list, compiled by a panel of racing experts, celebrates the sport's greatest Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car racers. The first five drivers are:
Pat Austin: A powerhouse in the 1980s and 1990s, Austin dominated the sport with four championships and 70 career Top Alcohol Funny Car national event wins. His talent and killer instinct, combined with his father's horsepower, struck fear in opponents. Austin's legacy includes becoming the first driver to win in both Top Alcohol Funny Car and Top Fuel at the same event, a feat he repeated.
Blaine Johnson: A four-time world champion, Johnson's dominance in the 1990s was unparalleled. With his brother and crew chief, Alan, he set a class record of 26 wins by the end of 1993. Johnson's perfect season in 1992, the first in the 10-race points format, showcased his unparalleled skill. His success extended to divisional championships, further solidifying his legacy.
Bucky Austin: The self-proclaimed 'Northwest Hitter', Bucky Austin carved a successful career in the Northwest. With eight Division 6 Top Alcohol Funny Car championships, 17 NHRA national events, and 44 divisional victories, he dominated the sport. His rivalry with brother Walt, built together in 1958, only added to the excitement. Bucky's final victory in 2004 and his role as a dominant owner/tuner in the NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series showcase his enduring impact.
Doug Gordon: Gordon's driving career began in 1996, but it was his recent success that truly stood out. With 19 national event wins since 2020, including world championships in 2020, 2022, and 2023, Gordon has emerged as a perennial title contender. The passing of the seat to his daughter, Maddi, in 2024, led to a historic moment at the Norwalk event, where Doug, Maddi, and team owner Ron Capps all won in different categories.
Joey Severance: Severance's success is a testament to a modest personality and a killer instinct. With five season titles, including four consecutive world championships between 2015 and 2018, he ended the Meyer family's dominance. Severance's achievements include four West Region championships and four Division 6 championships, showcasing his versatility and skill. His family's ownership of the Woodburn Dragstrip track in Oregon further highlights his impact on the sport.
