Ernst the Great White Shark's Rare Gulf Migration: Tracking a Massive Predator (2026)

A colossal great white shark, named Ernst, has been spotted off the coast of Mississippi, marking a rare migration through the Gulf of Mexico. This 12-foot, nearly 1,000-pound female shark was previously detected near Gulf Shores, Alabama, in mid-January, which was considered an unusual behavior for the species in that region. Researchers from OCEARCH, a U.S. marine research group, tagged Ernst in October 2025 in Nova Scotia, and she has since embarked on a remarkable journey, traveling thousands of miles along the U.S. East Coast. Chris Fischer, the expedition leader, noted that Ernst's movement westward is highly unusual for great white sharks in the Gulf, indicating a rich abundance of marine life in the area. The shark's proximity to the shore is also notable, suggesting a thriving ecosystem. Ernst's migration path has taken her from Canadian waters, through Maine, Miami, and the Florida Panhandle, and most recently, to the Mississippi coast. This journey highlights the adaptability and selectivity of great white sharks, which prefer areas with abundant marine life. As of February 1, Ernst was last detected south of Horn Island, off the Mississippi coast, continuing to inspire awe and curiosity among researchers and the public alike.
