Florida's Golfing Paradise Just Got Even Better – And Southwest Florida is Stealing the Spotlight!
Updated March 4, 2026, 3:05 p.m. ET
Florida isn't just the Sunshine State; it's a golfer's paradise. With a staggering over 1,250 courses, it boasts more than any other state in the U.S. (sources: GolfNow, LINKS Magazine). But here's where it gets exciting: four of Florida's top public courses, as ranked by Golf Digest, are right here in Southwest Florida! Two in Collier County, two in Lee County – this region is a golfer's dream come true.
But here's where it gets controversial... One of these gems, Old Corkscrew Golf Club, is transitioning to a members-only format. While this might limit access for some, it also raises questions about the future of public golf in the area. Is exclusivity the way forward, or should we fight to keep these courses accessible to all? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
Let's tee off and explore these Southwest Florida standouts, ranked by Golf Digest's prestigious list of the 40 Best Public Golf Courses in Florida (they admit it could easily have been 50!).
1. The Gasparilla Inn & Club (Boca Grande):
Imagine teeing off with the sparkling waters of Charlotte Harbor as your backdrop. That's the magic of Gasparilla. While it might not have the architectural grandeur of some courses, its Pete Dye design, with five holes hugging the island's shore, evokes comparisons to legendary seaside courses like Teeth of the Dog and Kiawah Island's Ocean Course. Recent renovations by Tripp Davis aim to restore Dye's original vision while making subtle improvements, ensuring Gasparilla remains a must-play. Website
2. Tiburon Golf Club: Gold (Naples):
Convenience meets world-class golf at Greg Norman's Tiburon Gold. Located in the heart of North Naples, this course offers a premium experience, but be prepared for green fees that can soar above $300. The Gold course, known for its stacked sod wall bunkers and lack of conventional rough, hosts both the LPGA’s CME Group Tour Championship and the PGA Tour’s QBE Shootout. Website
3. Old Corkscrew Golf Club (Estero):
Designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus, Old Corkscrew is a nature lover's paradise. This course winds through cypress trees, towering pines, and wetlands, demanding precision over power. Its tranquil setting, free from the intrusion of homes, makes the 30-minute drive from Naples well worth it. However, its future is evolving. The Hoffmann Family of Companies is transforming it into the Pandion Club, a members-only haven named after the osprey, a symbol of Florida's natural beauty and wealth. Construction is slated to begin soon, pending approval. Website
And this is the part most people miss... The Pandion Club's development team includes top architects and engineers, but the company building the new course remains a mystery as of February. What kind of golfing experience will they create? Only time will tell.
4. Tiburon Golf Club: Black (Naples):
Greg Norman's other Tiburon masterpiece, the Black course, offers a different challenge. Nestled among Florida pines, it utilizes the natural landscape to create undulating greens and unique crushed coquina waste areas. Like its Gold counterpart, it's a top contender on Golf Digest's Florida list. Website
The Future of Southwest Florida Golf:
With its stunning natural beauty, world-class design, and now, recognition from Golf Digest, Southwest Florida is solidifying its position as a premier golfing destination. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a weekend warrior, these courses offer something for everyone.
What do you think about the rise of members-only clubs like Pandion? Is it a necessary evolution, or does it threaten the accessibility of golf? Share your thoughts below!
