Cole Hamels' Hall of Fame Case: A Closer Look at His First Year on the Ballot

When the 2026 Baseball Hall of Fame ballot was unveiled in November, Cole Hamels emerged as a standout among first-year candidates, boasting the best prospects for induction. The 2026 class of newly eligible players is notably weak, and it's plausible that none of them will ever grace Cooperstown. However, Hamels' case is intriguing, and he possesses a stronger shot than his peers.

Hamels' professional journey began when the Phillies selected him with the 17th pick in the 2002 MLB draft from Rancho Bernardo High School in San Diego. He made his debut four years later on May 12, 2006, and quickly established himself as one of the sport's top pitchers over the subsequent decade.

From 2006 to 2016, Hamels consistently ranked among the best pitchers in the league. He led in several categories, including strikeouts (2,121), innings pitched (2,211 1/3), fWAR (45.2), wins (136), xFIP (3.42), and ERA (3.31). Despite never finishing in the top five in Cy Young voting, he showcased dominant seasons from 2010 to 2012, posting a 43-26 record with a 2.97 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 621 strikeouts against 157 walks in 640 innings.

Hamels' playoff prowess was equally impressive. In 2008, he led the Phillies to their first World Series title since 1980, posting a 4-0 record with a 1.80 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and 30 strikeouts against nine walks in 35 innings. He became the fifth player to win MVP in both the League Championship Series and the World Series in the same year.

Throughout his career (2006-2020), Hamels accumulated impressive statistics, including second place among qualified pitchers in innings (2,698) and ERA (3.43), third in strikeouts (2,560), and ninth in wins (163).

Despite his sustained excellence, Hamels was only an All-Star four times and never finished higher than sixth in Cy Young voting. This raises questions about his eligibility for the Hall of Fame.

Hamels' Hall of Fame case faces challenges in certain metrics. His career WAR (59) falls short of the average starting pitcher's mark (72.9) in Cooperstown. His JAWS rating (48.2) is also below the average Hall of Fame pitcher's rating (61.3). However, Hamels excels in WAR/162, with a 4.7 rating, slightly higher than the average HOF pitcher's 4.5.

A compelling argument for Hamels' inclusion lies in his ERA+ of 123, which ranks among the top 100 all-time. He surpasses numerous Hall of Fame starters in this stat, including Don Drysdale, Nolan Ryan, CC Sabathia, Warren Spahn, Gaylord Perry, Steve Carlton, Fergie Jenkins, and more.

As noted by SI's Tom Verducci, Hamels achieved 163 wins with an ERA+ of 123, a feat accomplished by only nine other left-handed pitchers, all of whom are in the Hall of Fame or will be: Rube Waddell, Lefty Grove, Carl Hubbell, Lefty Gomez, Hal Newhouser, Whitey Ford, Sandy Koufax, Randy Johnson, and Clayton Kershaw.

This distinction highlights Hamels' exceptional accomplishments, setting him apart from other Hall of Fame inductees.

However, Hamels' career took a downturn after leaving the Phillies in 2015. He endured a series of injuries that impacted his performance. An oblique muscle injury sidelined him for a significant portion of the 2017 season with the Rangers, and subsequent injuries with the Cubs in 2019 and the Braves in 2020 further hampered his effectiveness.

Despite making 84 starts over his final four seasons, Hamels' ERA rose to 3.94, and his WHIP increased to 1.28. A stronger finish to his career could have bolstered his Hall of Fame case.

On the surface, Hamels appears to fit the 'Hall of Very Good' mold. However, the evolving landscape of baseball, with increasing pitcher injuries and lower expectations for innings pitched, may prompt voters to reassess the career numbers required for induction. Whether Hamels receives a bust one day will likely depend on this shift in the game.
