Imagine waking up at a campsite near a historic battlefield, ready to embark on another day of an extraordinary journey. I love those early morning starts, especially when I can sit at a picnic table and gather my thoughts before hitting the trail. Today was a breeze, literally and figuratively, as we were close to a gas station and had the luxury of road walking ahead.
The cool morning air was a welcome change, and I bundled up as we made our way towards the gas station. Arriving around 6:30 AM, we hoped for a hot breakfast to fuel our adventure. Luckily, the gas station had everything we needed, and we even found a small table outside to enjoy our meal.
But here's where it gets interesting...
Today's journey would take us past multiple gas stations, stores, and attractions. Starting the day with a pit stop set the perfect tone for a long day of walking. After stocking up at the gas station, we continued along the road, eventually veering off onto a quieter dirt path. It was a pleasant change, allowing me to cover some easy miles as we progressed.
Even with our breakfast break, we were making excellent time. By 9:30 AM, we had already covered over 10 miles and were approaching the town of Lake Butler. Earlier this year, I had camped at the park in Lake Butler, and the city hall had kindly allowed hikers to camp on the grass nearby, even providing us with a bathroom key after hours.
And this is the part most people miss...
The trail ahead offered a mix of road walking, with a blend of paved roads, quiet bike paths, and dirt roads. It was a hiker's dream come true!
As we passed through Lake Butler, I couldn't help but think about how different this journey was compared to my previous hike in January. Back then, time was a precious commodity, and the thought of hiking the Florida Trail again seemed absurd. Little did I know that I would be aiming for an incredible 10,000 miles by the end of the year!
Controversial Interpretation: Is it ethical to repeat a trail so soon after completing it, especially when aiming for a mileage record?
By the afternoon, I had officially crossed the 9,000-mile marker for the year, leaving only 1,000 miles to go to achieve our goal. I was neck and neck with my hiking partner, Slide, and we were determined to finish strong.
The next few weeks promised to be eventful, as every mile would be a repeat of my journey in January. I couldn't help but reflect on my previous record-breaking hike and the challenges I faced, especially in Oregon, where a massive snowstorm turned an easy section into one of the hardest.
Thought Provoking Question: Does adversity make the journey more meaningful, or is an easy path just as rewarding?
As we continued on, we encountered a group of cats hanging out on the bike path. I captured a hilarious moment on camera, where one cat performed an incredible backflip, and it's now a must-watch on my YouTube channel, @madisonblagden.
The day ended with a beautiful sunset as we walked along the bike path, a perfect conclusion to another wonderful day in Florida.
The rest of the day was a breeze, and we walked along the wide, paved bike path without a care in the world. As the sun set, we encountered signs indicating a trail closure, and we had to navigate around on the road. Eventually, we found ourselves on an unpaved bike path, but it was still an improvement compared to some of the challenging miles I've faced this year.
We were lucky to find a quiet camping spot beside a small pond, and we settled in for the night. Tomorrow, we would be back on the road early, and our spot turned out to be ideal.
